Do You Need the Show's Developer Kit or Event API?

No. Wave Connect captures leads at any trade show without the organizer's developer kit, event API, or API key. Here is what that kit does, and the one thing it gives you that we do not.

No. Wave Connect does not need the show's developer kit, event API, or API key. You can exhibit at any trade show and start capturing leads without buying anything from the organizer and without any technical setup.

What a developer kit actually is

Most large shows sell exhibitors an API key, often called a developer kit or an event API, that lets a third-party lead app query that show's registration database in real time. Maritz, whose XPress Leads platform runs many US shows, describes it on its exhibitor portal as "an Event API that provides real-time access to complete lead information, enabling seamless integration between your lead retrieval system and event attendee data."

Three things are true of every one of them:

  • It is bought per show, from that show's registration vendor.

  • Every show uses a different one, so a kit for one event does nothing at the next.

  • It usually assumes your team has a developer to do the integration.

Some lead capture platforms depend on that key to scan a badge at all. Wave Connect does not.

How Wave Connect captures leads instead

The AI Badge Scanner reads the name and company printed on the badge. It does not read the badge's barcode or QR code, and it does not query the organizer's database, so there is no key to obtain and nothing to activate before the show.

Waterfall Lead Enrichment then takes that name and company and returns a verified, CRM-ready contact with email, phone, job title and LinkedIn profile, which syncs to your CRM in real time.

Because none of that depends on the organizer, the workflow is identical at every show you attend, including shows that encrypt their badge codes and shows that sell no lead retrieval product at all.

The one thing the official vendor gives you that we do not

We want to be straight about this, because it matters for some booths.

The show's official lead retrieval vendor owns the registration database. If the organizer asked attendees screening questions when they registered, such as buying role, budget or purchase timeline, only the official vendor can return those answers. Wave Connect cannot, because we never touch that database.

If those registration answers are the reason you exhibit, the official product is genuinely the right tool, and plenty of exhibitors run both.

What you do not give up

Your own qualifying questions are a separate thing, and Wave Connect has them built in. You can add custom qualifiers to capture interest level, product line, follow-up owner or anything else your team needs, and every scan is tagged to the event automatically. Those are your questions, asked at your booth, and they do not come from the registration file.

The short version

  • Developer kit or event API required? No.

  • Anything to buy from the organizer? No.

  • Any setup before the show? No. Download the app, create your event, and scan.

  • Works at shows we have never heard of? Yes. The scanner reads the printed badge, so the organizer is not involved.
